07 dicembre De Friesche brug/bridgeFriesche BrugOp de hoogte van de Herenstraat stond buiten de oude vestinggracht de Friesche poort, samen met de Kennemerpoort een van de belangrijkste toegangspoorten tot Alkmaar. De poort verdween in de 19de eeuw en er kwam een brug voor in de plaats, die Frieschebrug ging heten. Van 1835 tot 1952 was dit een lage ijzeren draaibrug. In 1952 is deze vervangen door de huidige Frieschebrug, die iets verderop kwam te liggen
Close to the present Herenstraat stood the Frieschepoort one of the most important entrance gates to Alkmaar demolished in the C19. The gate defended the northern route to the rest of West Friesland. It stood by the town’s moat as a part of the defensive walls. When the Noord hollands kanaal (North Hollands Canal) was cut a low iron swing bridge replaced it, but that too was replaced later by a lifting bridge named Frieschebrug (bridge). To the south of the town stood the Kennemerpoort by a bridge and the Ritsevoort, that commanded the road from Haarlam and Amsterdam; now also vanished. Special thanks to mr.
